In Treatment with Psychotherapist-Counsellor Rosalind HenfreyThe Matrix
We are all born into a matrix. That is, a set of circumstances, that allows or discourages individual growth. It is a form of control.
Our society is a matrix of sorts and so is our home life. Our lives follow similar patterns and routines. This is the material world, governed by parents, teachers and society.
But there is another world, the 'Immateria'. In this world we change the conditioning, the values and beliefs of those who have governed us and molded us into what they want from us.
The good news is, that we can recondition or reprogram ourselves. We can change. We can become strong and reach our individual potential. It is the world of our own minds, without influence from others. The inner conflicts that bring us to counselling, stem from this duality of 'worlds' or minds; the conditioned self versus the real or authentic self. This is the world we need to wake up from. We need to see ourselves as we really are, under the conditioning.
We know we are unhappy, that something is wrong but we can't explain it, and it can drive us to despair.
In counselling, we can get to know our own mind with its own truth, wants and needs. It is the alternative world, where we can make decisions and choices for ourselves. And it is there, waiting for you to knock and enter. Counselling can show you the door but you have to walk through.
Counselling can help you stop tumbling down the rabbit hole. It's just a matter of choice.
In the film 'The Matrix', Neo makes this (metaphorical) choice by taking the red pill. This pill will eventually show him the truth about his conditioning and the power of his own mind.
The final scene of The Matrix shows Neo in a telephone booth. His message is to the 'AI' infrastructure but it could be from me to you. I have edited his speech to make sense of how it relates to us in the material world that you and I largely inhabit.
"I know you’re out there. I know that you’re afraid. You’re afraid of change. I don’t know the future. I didn’t come here to tell you how it’s going to end. I came here to show you how it can begin. I’m going to show you what some others don’t want you to see. I’m going to show you a world without them. A world without deadening rules and controls. A world where anything is possible. Where you go from there is a choice I leave to you."
